Roofing Materials We Use

It’s Danley’s job to make the perfect roof for your home and that goes right down to the material we use. Your roof can be made from one of several different materials. We’ll go into more detail about them below:

  • Asphalt shingles – the most common and cost effective material used for roofs
  • Metal shakes or shingles – perfect option for high pitched roofs, they have a life expectancy of 30 years
  • Concrete – perfect for flat roofs (especially if you plan on building a deck). It’s extremely low maintenance and has a life expectancy of 20 years
  • Cedar Shingles – they’re made of cedar and have a life expectancy of 30 years
  • Slate – one of the most durable options with a life expectancy of over 200 years. Very heavy so the support structure must be strong
  • Tile – made of clay or concrete with a life expectancy of 100 years. There are many customization options such as color, texture and shape

Roofing Installation Process

Our roofing contractors pride themselves on making sure your roof is perfect for you. We always start by checking local building codes for your community’s roof requirements. We make sure all requirements are met before we start building or repairing your roof.

The installation starts by tearing off the old roof and preparing for new installation. We delicately, but quickly, remove the old roof no matter what material it’s made from. Our experts have decades of experience working with all roofing materials so you can rest assured that we’ll do the job right.

Your decking is the first layer of your roof. This is the base of the roof and is usually made from plywood or oriented strand board (OSB). We replace any rotted or broken decking to ensure a strong, durable and beautiful roof.

Once the decking is properly installed, a felt base underlayment must be installed to keep out the elements and prevent moisture build up. Danley’s only uses high quality, thick felt which also makes the house more energy efficient. You won’t be losing any heated or cooled air through the roof.

Now that the felt is down, it’s time to install the actual roof. We make sure to custom fit certain materials such as singles to the shape of your roof – including skylights, vents and chimney flashing. No detail is too small for us when installing your roof.

We also use nails rather than staples when installing certain roofing styles such as shingles. Nails last longer and hold stronger than staples which is important when enduring Chicago’s brutal weather.

Plus, we’ll install your roof ventilation also known as intake vents and pipe collar. These allow outside air to enter into your attic and ventilate the space. It’ll prevent your attic from getting too hot or cold. Pipe collars prevent rain and snow from getting into your home.

Finally, we’ll install the ridge vent into your roof. A ridge vent is installed on the peak of your roof and allows warm and humid air to escape your home. You mostly find ridge vent in homes with shingled roofs.

Common Roof Types

At Danley’s, we make sure that we offer you as many style options as possible. The type of roof determines its appearance and functionality so it’s extremely important to choose one that fits your needs. We want you to be happy with your new roof. Here are just a few of the roofing options we offer.

Hip Roof

A hip roof provides protection from the elements as well as a taller ceiling inside. This is because all four sides of your roof slope down creating a point at the top. It also creates a generous overhang on all four sides of the home.

The slope of your roof is what protects your home from the elements. Rain and snow can cause water damage to your shingles if it sits. The slope causes rain and snow to slide off of the roof so it doesn’t have a chance to damage it.

If you’re looking for durability, there isn’t anything stronger than a hip roof.  Heavy wind, hail and other extreme weather conditions are no match for the strength of it.

Cross Hipped Roof

Cross hipped roofs are a variation of a hip roof garage. It still has the four sloping sides for protection against rain and snow. The difference is that there are two hip roofs that are installed perpendicular to one another.

They also share other benefits of a hip roof garage such as extreme durability, taller ceilings and large overhangs. Also, their beauty is sure to improve your home’s curb appeal.

Gable Roofs

Gable roofs are extremely popular with Chicago homes – you’ve probably seen them many times. They consist of two roof surfaces that slant to the sides of your home creating a triangle (or gable) in the front and back.

What helps make the gable roof stand out from a hip roof is the slope. Hip roofs have a gradual slopes while gables have one that’s much steeper. In fact, gable roof designs recommend a 25 to 45 degree pitch angle for the roof. That means gable roofs are much better at preventing water damage since rain and snow will slide off easier.

A deep pitch also determines the height of your ceiling or attic space. A low-pitched roof reduces the headroom while a high-pitched roof increases the headroom.

Cross Gable Roofs

Cross gable roofs are visually interesting and add a little flair to one of the most common roofing styles. It combines a normal gable roof with additional sections crossing perpendicularly. Think of it like a gable roof inside of a gable roof.

Much like a cross hip roof being similar to a hip roof, a cross gable roof is similar to a gable roof. Both of the perpendicular roofs have 25 to 45 degree slopes so rain and snow are no problem for your cross gable roof.

They also offer amazing aesthetic appeal – there aren’t many roofing stlyes that can match its unique look. You’re sure to improve your home’s curb appeal with a cross gable roof.

Flat Roofs

A flat roof should be self explanatory – its a roof that’s flat. Up until now, all of the roofing styles mentioned have slopes to prevent water damage so you’re probably thinking a flat roof isn’t a good idea for your home.

That’s just not true – flat roofs are a great choice. They allow you to get the most out of your living space because you can build a deck or garden easily. It’s the perfect place to entertain guests!

If standing water and water damage are a concern, don’t worry. Flat roofs can be weatherproofed and have a 10+ year life expectancy. It’s also much easier to maintain than other roofing styles since it’s flat.

Are none of these styles calling out to you? Danley’s is here to help. We can custom build a roof for you that fits your needs. For instance, many homeowner combine several of these options together to create the roof of their dreams.
